The Old Butcher's is a labour of love for Ben Gat, the owner of The Old Bookshop just two doors up the road on North Street. He renovated the space almost single-handedly (with a bit of help from his Dad) from the previously run down antiques shop (see their Facebook page for pictures). Along the way, he discovered a number of surprise original features from the building's original incarnation as AD Collard's butchers, which really set the venue apart from other flat pack refits.
The Old Butcher's has ten keg lines, serving Bristol-made beers (and one West Country cider), along with, allegedly, the first ever wall-mounted cask hand-pull (again, thanks to Ben's Dad). Another unique aspect of The Old Butcher's is the deep south cuisine coming out of Carol's Crab Kitchen; soft-shell crab, wings and seafood boils make a perfect antidote to the dirty burger joints that seem to be taking over the city.
